Trench 9 has revealed even more secrets today, which came in the form of a retaining wall, seperating the drainage channel from the raised garden to the rear of the moat. Just like the channel, the wall is a later addition to the medieval soil identfied in the same trench. Both the drainage channel and wall date to around the mid 1600s.

So in short, Nigel and his band of volunteers have unveiled a history of land use within one trench that stretches from the 1100s to the 1800s.
