Over the course of the dowsing survey weekend, the location of buried features identified by visitors to Brockhampton Estate were recorded and marked on a map.
This map not only helps us to remember where potential archaeological features were found, but it also allows us to compare these results with the geophysical surveys.
The dowsing survey identified the location of a number of potential structures under the lawn behind the chapel as well as some along the fence within the orchard. Is this the site of the village?
A possible earlier wing to the moated house was also identified and the moat itself was thought to have been considerably larger in the past.
The chapel also appears to have had a circular boundary around it in the past, perhaps suggesting a graveyard. However one question that still needs to be answered is – are there any graves ? Perhaps the geophysical surveys will clarify this?
With this information to hand, we can begin to consider where the excavations will go.
